Cryostasis

Asleep on a bed of nitrogen,
she lies somewhere deep underground
and dreams of knives,
their points frozen-crystal sharp
against her skin.
She is immobilized,

longing to escape from winter
to a warmer climate–
a beach in Costa Rica
or somewhere on the equator.
All she wants to do is melt
because she is dying to live.
