The best cards

…are actually phone calls! I got a phone call today from a poet friend in Texas wishing me a happy birthday! Okay, so he’s a few days early :) Bill’s one of a handful of poets who have a very special place in my heart. Ten years ago I met them at Writer’s Write, where I cut my teeth and started to learn how to write. We hung out there for nearly a year, and it was a wild and crazy time, a highlight in my life. I’m still very thankful that God in His providence brought us all together. When you hit bumps in the road, it’s nice to have friends to lean on.

I enjoy poetry for many reasons, but one of the biggest is because it has introduced me to some very unique people I have come to know and love. Writing poetry will make you vulnerable to some extent, because you open yourself up in ways you wouldn’t if you’d kept your mouth shut! So let’s be real, shall we?
